Henry has been staying with his aunt and uncle since his parents were kidnapped. In his room he hears scratching coming from one of the walls. He removes the plaster and sees ninety-nine cupboards each leading to other worlds. Henry thinks that the answers lie behind his grandfather's locked bedroom door. But it can't be opened with anything, not even a chainsaw. One day, he and Henrietta, his cousin, were going upstairs realize that grandfathers door is open. This book was well written and was very descriptive. I could picture everything in my head. N.D. Wilson was able to give the reader a glimpse into what Henry was thinking. I also like how Henry finds the world away from the overprotective one his parents have created for him just as magical as the actual magical worlds he discovers exist behind the plaster in his bedroom at his uncle's house. What kind of world is it for a child who has never tasted a soda? Never played baseball? Never climbed a ladder? This book is a nice poke at the growing overprotectiveness that parents tend to display in the world.

If you like those kinds of creepy fantasy books and things like Coraline and The Narnia Series this is the book for you. It has portals to both good and evil places, adventure and an evil witch. So many things happen, some funny, some exiting and some scary. Every person in this book has his or her own individual personalities ...
