Basic Overview of A Clockwork Orange

The critically acclaimed novel written by Anthony Burgess, A Clockwork Orange, is a novel focused on the struggle for power in a now-dystopian England. The teenagers in the novel have invented their own form of slang that they call "Nasdat". The language consists of a mix between Russian and English words and is difficult to understand for the adult characters in the book. To rebel is to refuse to be controlled; therefore by using their own new language, the teenagers can feel as though the rules of society cannot control them any longer. is forced to watch, all the while Alex enjoys every bit of it and fancies even more heinous acts of cruelty. Alex and his friends want nothing more than to feel that they have all the power in their communities. They feel as though they are untouchable. Whenever they get into this mindset, however, fights begin to break out amongst themselves, and they all wonder who the real leader of their group is. Alex, of course, has full faith that he was born to lead, and that he shall never take orders from anyone. When cornered by his friends, he even stabs "at Georgie's nosh-holding rooker" (58) to establish his position. Then again, violence comes easy to the young gang leader.
