When children are young, they tend to play little games like four square, hide-and-seek, and, most famously, playing dolls. It is considered quite normal, even expected, for them to do so. These antics, however, become much less charming when those playing are not toddlers, but adults. Indeed, it becomes quite strange for a couple to be acting out these infantile games in their adult lives. However, we see an example of one such couple in A Doll's House. In Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House, the marriage of Nora and Torvald is but a childish game, because Torvald treats is wife like she is just a doll to entertain ...

is not interested in the fact that Nora was trying to do something nice for the family. His only concern is that she is not around to entertain him. This selfish behavior shows his complete inability to conduct himself with the empathy expected of a mature adult. Also, the fact that he is unable to entertain himself without the help of his wife draws an even greater parallel between Torvald's behavior and that of a petulant child. Torvald is also bitter about the long nights Nora spent working because she was, at that time, not under his control. Torvald is accustomed to dictating his wife's every movement, and it makes him acutely uncomfortable to realize that Nora can act of her own accord, and does not always want to entertain him. It would be as if a child looked up to find that his favorite doll had locked the door to the dollhouse because she did not feel like playing. Torvald is insulted by Nora's independence, which makes him appear much like a child who is entertained ...
