Richard Wagner, a sensational German composer who wrote breathtaking musical pieces which he used in the operas that he wrote. Wagner was born in Leipzig, Germany on May 22, 1813 and died in Venice, Italy on February 13, 1883. Wagner was born into a middle class family with eight siblings. His father Friedrich died shortly after Wagner’s birth, within the same year his mother Johanna remarried to Ludwig Geyer who was at the time a traveling actor. As a child Wagner never showed very much interest in anything, except for writing poetry. When he turned 18 Wagner started to study music with Theodor Weinlig. opera that would be shown to the public. It was on March 19th, 1836 that he directed his opera Das Liebesverbot, this work proved to be move than Wagner could manage. Wagner’s opera bankrupted the theatre and left Magdeburg to follow the woman he liked, Minna, to the city of Könnigsberg.
While in Könnigsberg on November 24th, 1836 he married Minna and became the music director of the city. Once again Wagner was faced with bankruptcy as the theatre in Könnigsberg rapidly lost its funds. The newlywed couple soon had to move because of their monetary problems. They moved to the city of Riga, where Wagner once again became the theatre’s music director. For two seasons he was able to produce some of his favorite works. He even got to direct his favorite opera Norma. Through this time period Wagner worked on the libretto for his truly monumental work, Rienzi, der Letzte der Tribunen.
