Jack Kerouac's On the Road is an invigorating story about a man who's got traveling in his blood and a quest for adventure in his heart. It is an excellent portrayal of life on the road and is said to be the best piece of literature to come out of the Beat generation of the 1950s. The ideas that are expressed in this book have not only influenced many great modern thinkers, but have also penetrated into the deepest levels of American thought and culture. The book has no doubt achieved this elevated literary status through its use of vibrant imagery, vivid description, and witty characterization.

The main contributor to this imagery, however, is Kerouac's use of extensive, though necessary, detailed description. The magnitude of the imagery in this story could never have been attained without the use of the vivid details that brought every place and situation to life. Sal's experience in Mexico, for example, uses wide ranges of description to let the reader know just how Sal is feeling through everything that happens to him. This kind of description is showcased in many places thoughout the book. Kerouac's stunning use of description to give the story an uncanny sense of realism plays a major role in making the story what it is.

One of the most interesting aspects of the story, however, is the characterization. This is mainly because all of the characters are based on Kerouac's real life friends and their own real life experiences.
