coming to automatic teller machines this summer could mean the end of those pesky personal identification numbers, or PINs. Instead of asking you for a PIN, the ATM will scan the iris of your eye (that’s the colored part) to identify you.
It may sound like science fiction, but these ATMs are already in use in Tokyo and London, and a few of American banks following suit this summer.
"This is still a pilot trial system," says Rob van Naarden, vice president of Sensar Inc., the main manufacturer of the iris-scanning technology. "We’ll be shipping about 500 or 600 units in the U.S. over the next 12 months."

The security benefits are obvious: no two people, not even identical twins, have the same iris. While cards and PINs can be stolen, irises cannot. Van Naarden says iris-scanning is also being used overseas at teller windows, kiosks, vaults, and safety deposit boxes.

Stopping Fraud, Saving Money And in an industry that loses billions each year to various forms of fraud, a near-foolproof identification system might just come in handy. "We will significantly reduce, or even eliminate, fraud with this system," van Naarden says.

Sensar has licensed its technology to ATM manufacturer NCR, and is also working with Citibank on testing the iris scanners.
