Like many other stories, “A Rose For Emily” had major changes made when it was illustrated in film format. Infact, the changes that were made gave the viewer and/or reader a different interpretation of the story in the sense of characterization and also the ever-infamous plot. Where characterization is concerned, Emily was portrayed as being romantically interested in Homer who in the written material was described as being a homosexual. In the area of the plot however, the two additional changes were that it was never shown when Emily cut her hair and the director never even gave/ showed any great significance to the collection of taxes as it was described in the story itself. In the story, “ A Rose for Emily” Homer was perceived as a homosexual, but in the film- A Rose for Emily, he was shown as Emily’s love interest. The unexpected love scene changed my whole perception of that area of the story and made it hard for me to also think about what could possibly come next.
The change in Homer’s sexuality was not the only change done in the story as there was no illustration of Emily cutting her hair after her father’s death. According to the narrator in “A Rose for Emily”, Emily was sick for a long time, “ When we saw her again, her hair was cut short, making her look like a girl, with a vague resemblance to those angels in coloured church windows,” (Faulkner, 153). This illustrated to the reader a sign of regression so that she could return to a time when her father would’ve been alive. With this scene not shown in the film, the viewer could not get the full impact the death of her father had on her.
