A Rose For Remembrance


At first glance a reader might not think much of the quote: “It is not I that belong to the past, but the past that belongs to me.” The quote is by Mary Antin, and could just have easily been said by Emily, a character in William Faulkner’s literary work entitled “A Rose for Emily”. In this work, Faulkner created a contrast between the past and the present that displayed the bold differences of generations and the denial of the change that, in this instance, was taken to the grave.
The past was shown as the characters Emily, Colonel Sartoris, the Negro servant, and the Board of Alderman (who accepted the Colonel's attitude toward Emily and rescinded her taxes). The present, however, was ...

“The house smells of dust and disuse and has a closed, dank smell.” (qtd. in Kirzner & Mandell 81). A description of Emily in the following paragraph discloses her similarity to the house. “She looked bloated like a body long submerged in motionless water, and of that palled hue” (qtd. in Kirzner & Mandell 81). It notes in the story that she had not always had that appearance. In the picture of a younger Emily with her father, she was shown as frail and apparently hungering to take part in the life of the era. After her father's death, she looked like a girl “with a vague resemblance to those angels in colored church windows--sort of tragic and serene” (qtd. in Kirzner & Mandell 83). This suggests that she had already begun her transition toward her own death, as had her way of life and traditions.
