A Separate Peace: Freud's Defense Mechanisms

Sigmund Freud's defense mechanisms influence many ways of writing authors use today. These mechanisms are used in everyday life, somtimes not even noticing they are being used. Many of these mechanisms appeared between the characters in John Knowels novel A Separate Peace. The character Gene uses Sigmund Frued's defense mechanisms displacement, rationalization, and intellectualization which shows his emotional instability after the trumatic incident in the tree.

Not only did Gene use displacement in the story but he also used rationalization too. Gene used this defense after an important event, and blames everyone else except himself. Rationaliziation is when the character supplies a logical reason as a oposed to the real reason. Gene uses this after he failed his test, and blames Finny for his bad grade because Finny took Gene to the beach the day before. "it was the first test I have ever flunked" (pg 50) It wasn't Finny's fault that Gene failed because it was Gene chocie to go to the beach with Finny or not. "I tried to catch up on what had been happening in trigonometry" (pg 51) If Gene really wanted to pass then he should've stayed at Devon school and studied.
