A Separate Peace


In the fascinating story about two best friends who struggle together with a situation called a conflict occurs. One day they go to jump off the branch over into a river for fun when Gene did something to make Finny (actually Phineas) fall and hurt himself badly and in the end, it ended up killing him. The question arises whether Gene intentionally caused Finny to fall into the river. I am going to prove that beyond a reasonable doubt that in fact Gene was the fault of him falling and in fact he did it intentionally. Gene may have regretted it afterwards but at the initial time it was his intentions to do it.

Another reason the Gene did it intentionally was because after the accident he couldn’t believe what he did. He didn’t think it was that serious, almost like he was surprised that what he did made a big injury. He did do it on purpose but without the intent of making such a big deal that it did. Gene talks about this with Finny’s doctor after it happened in this quote, "Right now, well of course, I am shocked. Who wouldn’t be shocked, for god sakes. It’s terrible, everything’s terrible." "But I don’t see why you should look so personally shocked. You looked like it happened to you or something." This means that he was shocked that his intentions went as far as they did. Gene put himself in Finny’s position and felt how bad it must be and that it is why it looked like it happened to him, he was frightened that he did it to him.
