A Separate Peace shows the life of boys who have begun to lose their innocence and are on their way to becoming men. The story is set around war and how the boys are trying to escape the troubles around them. Phineas and Gene are best friends at the beginning of the story and are the main two who the story focus’ on. As the boys grow older, they start to lose their sense of freedom and harmlessness. us that war is a dispiriting time, and that during such a time it seems like it will go on forever. “Winter’s occupation seems to have conquered, overrun and destroyed everything”. This quote can be used to show what happens post-war. Everything is run down and destroyed and whoever won the war has conquered. The author uses warlike terminology to describe the setting of the Winter Carnival. “The Saturday was a battleship gray” was what he to describe the atmosphere of the Winter Carnival. The author purposely uses this wording to reveal how the world around them is becoming more and more militaristic. As the carnival progressed, it became more chaotic, thus the quote, “The carnival’s breaking apart into a riot hung like a bomb between us.” The author uses the word bomb as a way to further push the thought of war, and how bombs are used to bring tension to a situation. Through these, the author breaks down their peace.
