A Tale Of Two Cities: Summary


A TALE OF TWO CITIES By Charles Dickens is a novel which depicts
London, England, and Paris, France, in the late seventeenth century.
Dickens reveals how the common people were mistreated and abused. The
following quote has been used many times. " It was the best of times, it
was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of
foolishness…" These are the opening words to this novel. Dickens reveals
his sympathy towards the common man during this time period. He shows how
the people suffer oppression at the hands of the rulers of that time. The
ordinary man was afraid for his life.

the tension is mounting. The Monseigneur, and the Monsieur the Marquis are
murdered by the French Resistance. Much secrecy occurs among the French
peasants. The Defarges are two of the main characters in the resistance.
Charles Darnay and Lucie Manette are eventually married and have a daughter.
It turns out Charles Darnay is really the nephew of the French Marquis that
was murdered. Darnay goes back to France to try and save a man named
Gabelle. Darnay himself is captured and ends up in prison. He is rescued by
his friend Carton. Carton takes Darnay's place in prison and thus, Darnay
is saved. Miss Pross is a dear friend of Lucie and has cared for her since
her youth. She is with the Manettes throughout the story. The storming of
the Bastille occurs in the course of this story. There is much blood shed.
Eventually the King and Queen of France are killed. Many peasants also die.
The main conflicts are resolved mostly by violence ...
