"A man's dying is more the survivors' affair than his own". - Thomas Mann. Although the two literary works I have read, "My Dog's Death" by John Updike and "A Father's Story" by Andre Dubus, both intend to evoke strong emotions, as death usually does; they have some similarities and some differences in tone, point of view, characters, setting and symbolism. In both however, the reality that someone or something dies, exist, yet the circumstances as to why the death occurs and how the reader's emotions are provoked, are truly different.

is the main focus of the poem and the center for which the theme is revolved around. Few characters are mentioned for the one understood owner seems to be speaking on behalf of his family as a whole.
In "A Father's Story", the short story is told in first person through the eyes of a lonely abandoned father and his struggles as he has lost his family and questions his values. Yet through it all he tries to remain close to his children, primarily his youngest who is a girl by spending time with her in the summer. The title to me creates some confusion for it makes one believe that it is a story narrated by one of his children instead of him.
In a "Dog's Death, it becomes clear that the intent of the writer is to entice emotions as commonplace as dealing with the death of a pet for it is inevitable in the circle of life that we humans and all forms of life will eventually die.
