“A Worn Path”: Phoenix


Eudora Wetly wrote a short story “A Worn Path”. In this story she talks about the determination and strengths of an elderly women, by the name of Phoenix Jackson. Phoenix is a poor elderly Negro, that did not have a lot and made due with what she have. Phoenix unfortunate condition did not stop her from walking down a path, that she has become so familiar with.
Phoenix starts walking early one morning down a country path. “It was December” (116) a bright cold day. On this day, Phoenix did what she knows best, starts walking. she went to take it there was just her own hand in the air.”(117) Imagining Phoenix condition, she can only wish and stay strong enough to keep walking. She didn’t stop there. Phoenix knew she needed to find a safe place, so she would not face harm. Even though she was hungry.
Phoenix has made it “Through the maze now.”(117) It will be easier for Phoenix to continue walking “for there was no path.”(117) She felt a bit of relief to know that she didn’t have to deal with some of the animals that would have been there back in the summer.
However, Phoenix did experience some fatalities as she continued to walk. She crossed a scarecrow and from a distance, she thought it to be a man. When she realized it was not a man, she presumed it to be a “GHOST”(117). As she came closer, Phoenix felt ashamed when she realized that it was just a scarecrow. “Then she went on”(117) down the tracks only to encounter more embarrassment. Phoenix decides to stop for water and was caught of guard ...
