The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian

The book The Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexis, is a story of a boy transferring schools and the challenges he faces as he does this. Arnold Spirit is an Indian boy who writes in his journal, which of course is in first person. He decides to switch schools from his old one in the Spokane Indian Reservation, to a school with many white students called Reardan. His best friend, Rowdy, is very angry about Arnold's new move. Arnold, also known as Junior, has difficulties fitting in at Reardan. The poverty in his family doesn't help his situation. at his new school, including the teachers, look down in him and treat his as if he is of lesser importance. For instance, on page 86 Junior says, "Yep, now even the teachers were treating me like an idiot." He feels as if the white students and teacher think they are better than all Indians. Also, throughout Arnold adventure in his new school he is trying to fit in and find his identity and who he is. For example, he draws out his life in small cartoons and this shows how he is discovering his love for drawing. Also, finds new friends at Reardan and becomes part of the basketball team. Culture also takes up a large portion of this novel. Junior, and the rest of the Indian reservation, take great pride in their Indian culture. For instance, on page 17 Arnold says, "The Spokane Tribe holds their annual powwow celebration over the Labor Day weekend." He then goes on to explain all the types of food they will eat and what they will do.
