Classic liberal thought holds that given proper knowledge of what one is able to accomplish as an individual is the same as the pursuit of happiness. The individual must be free in order to pursue happiness which is directed by the power of critical choice and conscience. The roots of liberal thought on the individual is the ancient Greek concept of eudaimonism, a philosophy of self knowledge and self actualization, in other words to know yourself and to be yourself.
