In Mark Twain’s novel, Huckleberry Finn, the main character, Huck, discovers many ways of the world, things he could never learn in a classroom. As a young boy, Huck comes across many things that some grown men had never experienced, such as a tumultuous relationship with his father, encounters with scoundrels, and acts of bigotry against his friend, Jim.
Huck’s Pap is not the typical loving father that Huck could respect and look up to. Pap not only abuses him verbally, but also physically because he thinks Huck is trying to be better than him. Huck became desperate to get rid of his money to protect himself only because he has no faith or trust in his father. Huck is determined to break from his brutal father, and though he would have to be on his own, his freedom is most important to him.
After Huck fakes his own death to break free, he escapes to Jackson’s Island where, a few days later, Jim appears. Jim, Miss Watson’s slave, runs away because he hears that he is going to be sold down the Mississippi River. When Huck and Jim meet up, Jim fears that Huck will turn him in as a runaway slave, but then realizes that Huck is also running away. Huck and Jim’s friendship grows stronger throughout the novel.
