Nearly 2,000 years before the Atlantic slave trade to America had even begun; there was the Roman slave trade. The Roman economy was built on a foundation of this slave trade. This form of slavery was taken for granted and was seen as a normal and necessary part of society. Roman law considered slaves to be items to be sold like any other product. They were used to better the Roman economy. Roman Slaves that were involved in the slave trade were subject to the will of their masters against whom they had no protection or rights.
