Nearly 2,000 years before the Atlantic slave trade to America had even begun; there was the Roman slave trade. The Roman economy was built on a foundation of this slave trade. This form of slavery was taken for granted and was seen as a normal and necessary part of society. Roman law considered slaves to be items to be sold like any other product. They were used to better the Roman economy. Roman Slaves that were involved in the slave trade were subject to the will of their masters against whom they had no protection or rights.

The Slave Traders who practiced their trade in the Slave Markets and Slave Auctions across the Empire were called Mangones or Venalities. They were rich men who had a high social standing. However, the actual Roman slave traders who ran the slave markets could not be trusted. Investors often questioned their honesty, so they to guarantee that the slaves they were selling were sound and that any defects in the slaves were pointed out during the selling process. For this reason, slaves were usually presented for sale naked. If the slave had defects not shown in his guarantee, the dealer had to take him back in six months or make good the buyer's loss.( Economic History)
The Roman slave trade grew by obtaining slaves from many different places. Many prisoners of Wars were used. Some Criminals would be sentenced to slavery rather than serve a normal punishment. ...
