Imagine you are driving on the freeway, and you are bumped from behind by another driver. It’s nothing serious, but the bump triggered your airbags to go off. Startled by the airbags inflating for no real reason, you wait for them to deflate so you can move to the shoulder. Meanwhile, another car traveling behind you doesn’t notice that you are stopped, until it’s too late, and hits you hard from behind. This time, the impact was serious. And the airbags didn’t go off. They inflate when the crash froces are about equivalent to striking a brick wall head on at 10-15 mph. are not designed to deploy in rollover crashes.
