was born into a rough life. He was the second of two illegitimate children. He was born on the island of Nevis in the British West Indies. The date of his birth is still argued among scholars. They believe that he was born sometime in between 1755 and 1756 but the exact date is unknown. His mother, a Huguenot or French catholic, was named Rachel Faucett lavien.
