The definition of “beauty” in today’s culture is narrowly described. There is generally one type of woman who fits in this category and is understood and accepted by the masses to be “beautiful.” These expectations have been altered throughout American history. However, one thing has never changed. A woman is judged by her beauty – her hair, body, and clothing have been decided for her. Women who do not appeal to these standards are often forgotten. When they are forgotten they lose the true meaning of being beautiful and where beauty really lies. that she memorized for Easter Sunday. Then her accident happened. Walker then emphasizes to the reader that the way she views herself now and the way she thinks people view her at the age of eight have changed for the worse. She then states at the age of fourteen her view of beauty changes. She says she can raise her head now that she has had her I fixed. Finally she says at the age of twenty-seven she loved her eye. She said it had taught her of shame, anger, and inner vision.
In her narrative, imagery also emphasizes Walker’s view of herself and how others view her. She starts by describing how she looked when she was a little girl. “I am dressed in a green, flocked, scalloped-hem dress (handmade by my adoring sister, Ruth) that has it’s own smooth satin petticoat and tiny hot-pink roses tucked into each scallop. My shoes, new T-strap patent leather, again highly biscuit-polished.” This language that she uses projects the image that she is happy with the way she looks ...
