Until the topic was assigned, I had never realized the various ways in which schools alienate students. When I first think of a classroom environment, I believe it promotes equality among peers. However, this is typically not so, especially among students with learning disabilities and genders. From the way a student teaches to the many cliques, students are constantly being divided in and outside of the classroom.

Another form of alienation found in schools, is the honor roll system. Students who have a high GPA are often commended for their outstanding performance. At my high school, their names were read over the loud speaker and published in the newspaper. The principle even takes the time to sign the report cards of those with honors. While it is important to give recognition to those who have achieved, It is also important to acknowledge those who are trying. They need encouragement and support as well. Without this, they feel as though no one cares how they do. They have no incentive or drive.
