All The Colors Of Sunset

The mood of “All the colors of sunset” by Luci Tapahonso is a gloomy story. Even during the parts that seem like they could be a beautiful moment, there is still a feeling of sadness. Not being able to let go, things that the baby never got to do, grieving, and sleeping just to dream about the baby were just a few of the things that made this story so sad.
Luci Tapahonso talks about letting her sadness go at the end of the day, “Sometimes in the evenings, I think of this when the sun is setting, and all the bright colors fall somewhere into the west. Her way of grieving is silence. “Usually it was a happy and noisy time, but that day was quieter than usual. At least we had taken care of everything.”(393)Everyone respected this and gave her the quiet that she wanted. They probably didn’t know what to say to her either. There is nothing anyone can say to make someone feel better about losing a loved one. It is sad to have a group of people work in silence, during a time that is usually fun and exciting, because no one knows what to say to make her feel better.
She has dreams that her granddaughter is still alive, and it keeps her going through the next day. She was looking forward to sleeping so that she could see her granddaughter in her dreams. (393)The happy dreams are a good way to remember her, but it isn’t healthy to look forward to sleeping every day just to be with her again. She is living to sleep and not able to move on from the death of her granddaughter.
