What do people think of when they hear the word wrestling? Most think of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) or World Championship Wrestling (WCW) while some people might actually know that wrestling (amateur) is a real sport, not a skit. There are three huge differences between professional wrestling and amateur wrestling (High School and Collegiate), are the actual wrestlers, followed by technique, then promotion. A person that wrestles is called a wrestler or a grappler and in professional wrestling they are either not in shape or just have big muscles while a real grappler (amateur) is mostly in great shape. Another factor differing professionals from amateurs is their build. Professionals usually take the “muscle bound” or the “I am just a fat slob” approach into the wrestling world. Amateurs go for the best all around shape, meaning strength, endurance and flexibility.
The moves a grappler knows, practices and can execute are known as their technique. A professionals technique, if any consists of anything and everything, due to the lack of enforcement during a match. Therefore a professional can kick, punch, and use objects to defeat their opponent. An amateur can not use these tactics, because they will be disqualified and suspended. Where the wrestling takes place is even different for the two sports. Professionals use a boxing ring for their matches, and amateurs use a mat with an outline of a circle that marks the boundary for the matches.
