in the fields really wore on our family. Throughout the winters the field workers would chop wood and slaughter pigs, along with getting ready for Spring season. Some days Ma and Ben would have to go help Pa up and to our living quarters. We work on one of the largest cotton plantations this side of the Mississippi River. Every Sunday our family attended church, not a week went by that we would miss. It was one of the only places that we felt safe. One Sunday afternoon around Christmas time after church had been dismissed, master and his wife were talking to their friends outside of church. Master told us to stay out of their business.
