Joyce Carol Oates short story, “Where are you going, Where have you been” tells the story of Connie, a young girl who is trapped in the thoughts of her fantasy dreams. It is discovered that Connie has two sides of behavior to her, one that she displays at home in front of her mother, and one that is present when she is out in public amongst boys and her friends. When Arnold Friend appears in the story however, we begin to see these two sides of her personality merge. While her desire to explore her sexuality does displays a certain level of maturity at the end of the night she is always driven back home to be sheltered from dangers and the responsibilities of adulthood. Her attributes are made clear by her belief that the only thing important in the life is how pretty one looks. Stated clearly, “She knew she was pretty and that was everything”, (Oates 664). Examples of how she displayed this throughout the story include her habit of constantly starring into the mirror to admire herself, how she thinks her mother loves her more than her sister because of her beauty. While Connie’s mother notices this behavior of Connie and always makes remarks to her about it, she fails to force her to take on any responsibilities to our knowledge.
