Analysis of the Function of Geography in Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Thomas Foster, author of How to Read Literature Like a Professor, defines geography as humans inhabiting space and the space that inhabits humans. Within "Rime of the Ancient Mariner", a gothic by Samuel Coleridge, there is much space to be discussed. The word geography often elicits the images of hills, maps, or landmarks but can also explain the history, economy, and general feeling. His story starts off with a ship sailing away from England's dock. We can infer that is it England when in line 23 he states, "Merrily did we drop, below the kirk." Kirk is a colloquialism for a church that is most used in England. It is almost immediately that the ship is off course when they begin to move south and reach "mist and snow"(51) and "Ice, mast high, came floating by as green as emerald" (53,54,55). The reader can infer that they have reached the waters of Antarctica by the reference to glaciers and snow. The man who is listening to the mariner wants to participate in the wedding but has the same hunger, that the mariner has to tell, to listen.
