She can see the world through her own eyes, but also through the eyes of others, so she understands people, and what they want or need. She is a sympathetic character because she loves her mother and only wants to be with her once more before she dies.
This is important to the work because it shows how the author understands her characters, and portrays them with sympathy and empathy. It makes her characters more real, and illustrates how they relate to each other in the stories, and in the world. They seem like real people because of their feelings and their needs, and this quote helps show how important believable and sympathetic characters are to truly good fiction.
