In Jan Betty's story "A Waitress's Instruction on Tipping", she discusses some protocol on tipping a waitress. She says that you should always tip at least twenty percent of your bill, someone tipping less than ten percent, should eat at home.

She asks that you never leave change instead of bills and never leave pennies at all. Also, a tip should never be hidden. Do not wait around for a thank you after you tip or pull out a tipping guide in public. If the waitress gets you cigarettes, hangs your coat, or calls you a taxi, you should tip them or do it yourself. A fifty dollar bottle of wine should include a tip of ten dollars. A cocktail should constitute a tip larger than thirty five cents. Even if you are just having coffee, you should leave tip of five dollars. Never bribe the waitress to do things by hinting at a large tip, or act like the busboy might take the tip.
I disagree with a lot of what Betty said. If the waitress was not good then you should tip them little if anything. The waitress should earn their tip. You do not owe the waitress a tip. ...
