The poem tells us readers that there is an 'unspoken' conflict experienced within the family, and this conflict is expressed by the mother, who complains about her family who gauges her worth as a mother, wife, and woman depending on her performance in accomplishing household chores for each of them. Thus, the Woman's voice says she received an "A" from her husband for making supper, an average mark from her son; and a "passing mark" from her daughter. The conflict becomes evident at the end of the poem, where the Woman expresses anger and protests against the treatment she receives by saying, "Wait 'til they learn/ I'm dropping out."
The setting and atmosphere of the subjects of the poem establishes the conflict that is created and expressed at the end of the poem.
