Many subsequent theories in this connection focused on the environmental factors as possible causes of violent behavior. It is now commonly believed that violence breeds violence and serial killers are the product of a more violent society and media coverage. Beaty informs us that an average child sees 16,000 murders while growing up and this desensitizes him to the horrors of homicide. While the author claims that there exists enough evidence to support this theory, we cannot possible hold violent society or media as the single definitive cause of anti-social behavior of serial killers. This is because since every child watches the same amount of murders, all of them should have turned violent as adults if there were no other factors involved. So we can say that while it can be an influence, it is not the sole cause.
