These competitions and contests occurred every four years as Greek communities from all parts of the Mediterranean sent their best athletes to the polis of Olympia. To ensure the safety of their players, an Olympic Truce was enacted so that athletes could travel from their countries to the Games peacefully. The prizes for the victors were olive wreaths or crowns. The ancient games were celebrated until 393 AD, when Theodosius I suppressed the games as part of his campaign to impose Christianity as the state religion. Not only did these competitions give athletes a chance to display their many talents and abilities but it brought a sense of unity throughout Greece.
