Although sports are competitive and full of emotions spirited, the Greek citizens showed great support for all competitors during the ancient Greek Olympics. The ancient Greek Olympic Games consisted of a series of athletic competitions and contests. These games were held for different representatives of different city- states of Greece in honor of the God Zeus. The Greeks that came to the Sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia shared the same religious beliefs and spoke the same language. These competitions and contests occurred every four years as Greek communities from all parts of the Mediterranean sent their best athletes to the polis of Olympia. To ensure the safety of their players, an Olympic Truce was enacted so that athletes could travel from their countries to the Games peacefully. The prizes for the victors were olive wreaths or crowns.
