Women in colonial America lived much different lives than those of today’s women. Although gender-specific roles existed and were enforced by society’s watchful eye, many women stepped beyond these rigid guidelines and became writers. Sarah Kemble Knight and Anne Bradstreet, although differing in writing style and format and personal background, shared in the struggle for literary freedom and became two such pioneering women writers.

Her accounts are mostly non-fictional with a bit of reflective observation; she spares no details to good taste.
Knight and Bradstreet emerged from very different backgrounds. Bradstreet was raised in the house of a British nobleman. At sixteen, she married a scholar who eventually became the governor of Massachusetts. She came to America with her husband and parents, and she moved with her husband to a small town outside of Boston, where she lived as a devoted Puritan wife and mother of eight. Her husband, children, and religion frequently appeared as topics of her work. Knight lived a completely different life.
