Ansel Adams is America's photographer. His photographs of the nature, especially those of the Southwest, have captivated people for nearly a century now. Adams' use of light distinguished his black and white photographs from all other photographers. It has been said that Adams, more than any other artist, helped change how people felt about the wilderness, about nature.
Born in 1902, Adams spent his youth studying music. However, in the early 1920's, while visiting Yosemite National Park, Adams became overwhelmed by the beauty around him and intrigued by the way the sunlight changed the contours of the trees and rocks around him. minutes to set up his camera and capture the image before the light was lost to nightfall (Adams 1986). This image is truly enchanting. The balance of black and white, the composition of the moon, mountains, and village is perfect. It is remarkable that he was able to capture this image basically on the spur of the moment (Adams 1986).
Ansel Adams is known for his use of contrast, of painting with lights and shadows. He created these contrasts with the use of a red lens filter, which deepened the shadows to black while letting the light pop out to near stark white (Schwan 2002). The results are dramatic and inspiring. It has been said that Adams use of photography was not only visual, but, emotional. One critic said that Adams approached landscapes, "not by evading reality, but by embracing it" (Schwan 2002). Moreover, he was known to create magic in the darkroom by manipulating tones using special developing processes (Schwan 2002).
