In his play, Antigone, Sophocles’s depiction of Creon proves him to
be the strongest candidate for a Greek tragedy. Through his presentation
of hubris, error in judgment, and realization of downfall, Creon posses the
majority of characteristics necessary in being a central tragic figure.
One may suspect Antigone represents the tragic figure because the
play is, in fact, named after her. She also presents the reader with many
qualities a tragic figure holds and compels us to believe she is the best
suited for the position. Antigone’s purpose, however, is not to fulfill
this goal but rather serve as a foil in Creon’s actions and set him up to
realize the error in his ways. And it is ...

glory best in the scene where she and Ismene are sentenced to death but
Antigone will not let her sister die. We can see Antigone has hubris but
her character is not developed enough to see her display of arrogance
steadily throughout the play as we can see in Creon.
With Creon, all the characteristics in being a tragic figure become
tied into one. First of all, Creon’s motive is he must rule and rebuild a
kingdom that was just a war between two brothers. After he has made the
decision to leave the body of Polynecies for the animals, he can not let
the people of the kingdom believe his mind can be swayed even by the
daughter of the late king, Oedipus-he must act as a strong king. This is
where his hubris comes into play which later leads to his error in judgment
with Teresias and finally, the realization of his downfall.
Creon’s excessive pride can first be seen in his conversation with
the sentry when told about the recent situation. The sentry inquires “Are
