Birmingham, Alabama, in the 1960s, experienced high tension and injustice of racialism. Blacks were only permitted to attend in designated areas in buses, stores, and restaurants. They were only allowed to be in their own churches, schools, and other public areas and could not share using the same places with whites. Both Dr. King and the clergymen used the art of argument to appeal to people to believe their views on the same situation. Both letters are excellent examples of how opposite writers can use rhetoric to develop their argument through a combination between warrants and ethos; however, Dr. King, with his letter, shows an advantage by having fewer fallacies in his argument.
