Arthur Miller Biography

Arthur was born on October 17, 1915 to Isidore and Augusta Miller. He died of heart failure at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut, on February 10, 2005.
Early Years: Arthur Miller was born in Harlem, New York, although he shortly moved to a small frame house in Brooklyn. His father was an illiterate Jewish immigrant from Poland whose successful ladies-wear manufacture and shopkeeper was ruined in the depression. He was exempt from the draft due to a football injury to his left knee from his earlier years. Arthur was inspired to become a writer after reading Dostoevsky’s novel The Brothers Karamazov.

Personal Life: In 1940 Arthur married a Catholic girl, Mary Slattery, his college sweetheart. In June 1956, Arthur left Mary and on June 29, married Marilyn Monroe. Then in 1961, the pair divorced and Marilyn’s life went downhill from there. Arthur, however, married photographer Inge Morath on February 17, 1962. The first of his two children, Rebecca, was born that September. Then in November 1966, his second child, Daniel was born. Unfortunately, Daniel was born with Down Syndrome, which was a tough topic in Arthur’s life.
