Assassination Of Archduke Ferdinand

In June of 1914, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the thrown of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was assassinated, along with his wife, by a Slavic assassin in the city of Sarajevo, with the help of Serbians. The Slavs and Serbs wanted independence for their people, and believed the assassination would start a chain of events that would end Austro-Hungarian rule of their peoples. This event was the pivotal event that led to World War I, one of the most devastating wars ever fought in modern times. In fact the assassination was a complicate plot. Also at the end of World War I, the terms of surrender for Germany were harsh and left many Germans angry at the requirements they had to tolerate, such as limited remilitarization.

Three long-term events in particular resulted from the war started in Sarejevo in 1914. First, the Balkans were divided up in a way that assured that the area would remain in turmoil, and later, leave the countries weakened and vulnerable for a Communist takeover.

Second, the terms of surrender demanded of Germany were so onerous that they made it relatively easy for an obscure private named Adolf Hitler to rise to power on a wave of German pride, believing that Hitler could restore their former importance in the world.

Finally, the artificial division of the countries in the Balkans led to the ethnic strife still going on there to this day.
