First Assignment: Genesis Family Problems

Throughout the book of Genesis in the Bible, there are quite a few different quarrels between two people about different things. Some of these rivalries include; Cain and Abel, Sarah and Hagar, and Jacob and Esau. Still, there are more problems between others in Genesis, however these pairs are quite important to the story.
First off there are Cain and Abel. Cain was the first born, and Abel the second. "Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground"(Gen. Ch. 4). Each of them brought gifts to God. Cain gave the fruit of the land, and Abel the first born of his flock. God respected ...

him and his land for the rest of time. God makes it so that whoever slays Cain, vengeance shall be taken upon them sevenfold. This story represents the first murderer, Cain, and the first real family problems.
Another important pair is that of Hagar and Sarah. Sarah was Abraham's first wife. However, Sarah did not have the ability to bear children. So, Sarah tells Abraham, "Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children; go in to my maid; it may be that I shall obtain children by her" (Gen. Ch. 16). And so Abram listened to his wife Sarah, and he took Hagar as a wife. He then went in to her and bore a child. The child's name between Hagar and Abram was Ishmael. At this time Abram was eighty-six years old. Although some years later Sarah was displeased because the Lord told her that she were to bear Abraham children and he had not kept his promise.
