The poem "Aunt Jennifer's Tigers" by Adrienne Rich is about the oppression of women. In the poem the speaker has an anxious tone and is telling the reader a story about her aunt. The story describes how the aunt is being oppressed in her marriage and she uses the embroidery to express herself. Reading through the poem you can immediately see that something is wrong just by how the feel of the wedding band is described that it isn't a healthy marriage, but digging deeper into the poem there is more to what is there. The yellow of the "bright topaz" (2) is supposed to depict the sun and its energy and the green in the "world of green" (2) is supposed to remind the reader of spring and vitality. The second symbol is Aunt Jennifer herself and she symbolizes the victims of male oppression in unhappy marriages that suffer from the loss of individuality, dignity, and personal freedom silently. Aunt Jennifer becomes dependent, fearful, and frail. The third symbol is the wedding band. The wedding band itself is a symbol of marriage and the weight of it refers to the burden of unsuccessful marriage and gender expectations. Rich uses the word ringed when talking about ordeals she has been through (10) and ringed means encircled or trapped, which has no opening meaning she has no way to get out of her marriage.
