My grandfather was shipped out in December 1941 and severed in the Air Force during World War II. He left my grandmother by herself to raise a child under the help of her parents' shelter and emotional help, and he would send his check he received from the Air Force. It was not common for my grandmother and for women in the mid 1940's to work and leave their children behind. After my grandfather returned from WWII, he was able to see his wife and his three-year-old son (whom he had never seen before).

with my grandmother. When he came back from the War, he and his family were stationed in Illinois then relocated to Ohio. In Ohio, my grandfather soon decided to retire.
They diagnosed my grandfather with cancer in July 1960, and in November of that year he died at the age of 48 and my grandmother was left widowed with her two children (twelve and seventeen). My grandmother did not have the skills to go out and get a job right away. As the time went on, she was unable to support her family on a pension, which she received from the Air force, so, that led her to find a job. She then found an unskilled job in a factory, making packaging materials. With that money my grandmother was able to raise her family and to afford a few things for herself.
This experience impacted my mother's decision to go to college in Cincinnati, Ohio. This allowed her choose a career that would enable her to support herself and a family in the future. After college, she was a registered nurse and ...
