I was born in the United States; my parents are Syrians so their language was Arabic. My family cared about teaching me the Arabic language at home. They didn’t use English language that often, so when I was one year old I understood most of the Arabic words they say. Sometimes I hear my father talking on the phone and it wasn’t Arabic. I tried to listen to what he said so many times but I didn’t understand him. When I went to the nursery I felt that I am lost. All the kids and the teachers are speaking a different language. me when I asked about his reason behind teaching me Arabic even before the language of the country I live in. My father’s answer about this was very smart he told me that I will learn English sooner or later as I will hear everyone around me speaking such language at school, in shops, even in the streets. But in the United States people don’t speak Arabic that much so they found it better to teach me the language so that I will be bilingual and I will always keep my native language and English will come through practice. My father was totally right because now I feel that I master both languages and I feel connected too to my origins. Every year my family travels to Syria to visit their families and friends and everybody speaks Arabic and I feel so proud that I understand my own language.
