Babyface: The Life Of Toni Chessmore

Have you ever felt that the people you love are perfect, and then
came to realize they are not? In the realistic fiction novel Babyface by
Norma Fox Mazer, Toni Chessmore thinks her life is perfect. She has great
friends, loving parents and lots of good luck. People even call her Toni-
Luck. But when her best friend moves away and her sister tells her a
family secret, her life seems to unravel. Toni must learn to except her
not-so-fairytale-life and adjust to the changes that are about to happen.
In Babyface, the author is implying that people adjust to things
differently.

sister. Toni has an older sister, Martine, who lives in New York. Toni's
father has a small heart attack and he and Toni's mother are placed in a
care center for a few months. Her parents decide it would be best for Toni
to go stay with Martine while her father is recuperating. Martine and Toni
don't get along at all and it is hard for them to adjust to living with
each other.

A big change in Toni's life occurs when Martine tells her a
devastating family secret. Toni always pictured her parents as the perfect,
loving couple. But when Toni and Martine get in a fight, Martine tells
Toni the truth. Before Toni was born, her parents got in a fight, and her
father punched her mother. They were about to get a divorce when they
found out her mother was pregnant with Toni. They decided to stay together
just because of Toni. When Toni hears this she doesn't believe it at first.
