Biography

Johann Sebastian Bas was born 31 March 1685, in Eisenach. He is the youngest child of Maria Elisabeth Lammerhirt, and Johann Ambrosius Bach. His uncles were all skilled musicians, whose position’s extended from court chamber musicians, church organists to composers.
Bach’s mother died in 1694, and his father died eight months later. The 10 year old Bach moved in with his oldest brother, Johann Christoph Bach. There he studied and performed music. The young Bach saw and helped in the matenience of the organ.

He took an unapproved time off from Arnstadt for several months in 1705 and 1706, when he went to visit the Dieterich Buxtehude.
Bach was later given a position as an organist at St. Blasius’s in Muhlhausen. Four months later he married his second cousin Maria Barbara Bach. They had seven children together. Only four of the seven children lived to become adults.
Bach wrote an elaborate piece for the induction of the new council in 1708. The council was so pleased with the music that they paid generously for its publication. In later years they had Bach return to conduct it.
Bach became the court organist and concertmaster at Weimar, even though he only worked a year at Muhlhausen. Bach’s position in Weimar was the start him composing keyboard and orchestral works. In Weimar, he had the opportunity to play and compose for the organ, and to perform varied concert music with the duke’s ensemble.
