Bacteria on Cell Phones?

Problem:

Is there is bacteria growing on cell phones, and if there is, how much?

Background Research:

Bacteria are classified into two kingdoms, Eubacteria and Archaebacteria. They are found everywhere, especially Eubacteria. Bacteria are microscopic prokaryotes. They are heterotrophs, meaning the need to consume food to survive. They reproduce by binary fission, and in good conditions (warm, dark, low moisture, with a food source), they can reproduce every twenty minutes.

Hypothesis:

If we swab our cell phones, then we will find bacteria if we put it in an incubator for a few days.

Independent variable:

2. Using a sharpie and a ruler, divide the bottom of the plate into four equal quadrants. Then, number the quadrants on the side of the petri plate.

3. Tape the petri plate shut to prevent other bacteria from entering to keep the experiment controlled.

4. Open the petri plate, and then use a sterile cotton swab to swab a cell phone and then swab quadrant #1 of the petri plate.

5. Repeat with 2 other cell phones in quadrants #2 and #3.

6. Retape the petri plate shut to prevent the spread of the bacteria.

7. Place in incubator at 37o C for 4 days.

8. Take the petri plate out of the incubator after 4 days, observe, and record data.

Conclusion:

In our experiment, we tested cell phones to see whether or not there were bacteria growing on the surface of them. Our hypothesis was that we thought there would be bacteria on them. Our results supported our hypothesis, because after we took the ...
