Analysis of Barack Obama’s “Yes We Can” Speech to Nashua, New Hampshire (January, 2008)

Barack Obama’s ‘Yes We Can’ speech presented in Nashua, New Hampshire on the 8th of January 2008 is a defining moment in his career due to its implications to Obama’s presidential campaign. The speech was presented in the Nashua South High School Gym on the night of the New Hampshire primary, where Obama lost marginally to Hilary Clinton. The audience of the speech is the people in the high school gym, but the target audience is the whole of America, as the speech was televised and available to Americans. imagined that we’d have accomplished what we did here tonight.” This attracts the attention of the audience because he uses the inclusive pronoun, ‘we’. He is making the audience feel included and special, so that they truly listen to his speech.

He then uses second person when he says, “…you came out and spoke up for change.” This is Obama speaking directly to each and every member of the audience and brings the audience closer by doing this. Additionally, Obama uses the catch phrase, “There is something happening in America.” The phrase itself is powerful because it is meaningful to Americans, who are very passionate patriots and Obama alludes to the fact that there is a magical ‘something’ happening in America, which gives the audience a warm, positive feeling. Both techniques add to the general a persuasiveness of the speech as well as appealing to the audience by praising them and looking into the future.
