Barbie Doll: An Analysis

With the evolution of society, materialism has become strongly present in our every day lives. Constantly exposed to changing styles and habits, today's generation is forced to keep up with rising standards that are overwhelming and destructive. As illustrated in the poem, "Barbie Doll," by Marge Piercy the character faced such strong pressure by society to fit in, that she tragically took her own life.
This theme is strongly present from the beginning of the poem where the first paragraph contains a message concerning the loss of childhood innocence. It describes how the girl was born as,"usual," just like every other child. She played with toys, makeup e.t.c. It was the ...

second paragraph, her true identity & characteristics are further described in more detail. She had everything a "normal" happy girl could have; yet she didn't meet the norms of society. She was not what society expected a girl to look like so she slowly became a victim of society's expectations. As is mentioned in the second to last line of paragraph 2, she "went to & fro apologizing. Everyone saw a fat nose on thick legs." She no longer saw herself in that same light as before, that light which allowed her to see equality in everyone. How the world became a critict, a form of reminder that she was not a normal girl, unique in her own ways, but something which she should be ashamed of. She could no longer be herself and enjoy that simplicity of being free of any complexes, whereby slowly draining the life out of her.
