Analysis of ``Barn Burning'' by William Faulkner

In the short story Barn Burning by William Faulkner, a young boy named Sartoris Snopes, also called Sarty, is torn between doing the right thing, and being loyal to his family. His father, Abner Snopes, was a poor man. He would burn the barns of wealthier people whom he worked for. There are many cases of symbolism in Barn Burning. Two obvious symbols are the fires Abner sets and the blood on the face of young Sarty after a fight with another boy.

overlooked in the story. ``Can't you wipe off some fo the blood before it dries?... I'll wash it tonight.'' After a fight with another boy for calling his father a barn burner, Sarty is bleeding. He will not let his mother clean the blood from his face. Sarty had come very close to telling the truth to the Justice in the court earlier, and the dried blood on his face symbolizes his loyalty to his father. He would fight and be injured to defend his father, and his fathers' name, even if it tore at his soul to be so dishonest. The blood was proof he was loyal to his father.

Barn Burning uses many symbols for greed, envy, rage, loyalty, anger and power. Abner Snopes set fire to the barns to feel powerful, and his son struggled with knowing it was wrong and staying loyal to his father. He fought with a boy to defend his family and prove his loyalty to his father. In the end, Sarty's inner battle between doing the right thing and remaining loyal, came to an abrupt end when he warned ...
