In the beginning of this story we see the general store was turned into a court room where the Justice of the Peace is sitting at the table. In the back of the room we find a young boy, Colonel Sartoris “Sarty” Snopes, crouched on a nail keg hoping he will not have to testify in the arson case his father faces. Young Sarty knew his father was guilty of the crime, but he still didn’t want to testify against him. Sarty perceives the judge as benevolently, but nonetheless the judge is the family’s enemy. The reason for this is because Sarty hasn’t separated himself from his family so whatever enemy his father has is also an enemy of his.
