Basketball Dreams


All boys have dreams. Some dreams are great while others are small. Some dream of being famous, others of meeting their heroes. I am one of the lucky few who had the opportunity to not only meet my hero, but to spend days with him laughing, talking, sharing, but above all learning. My hero is my grandfather, Manuel Rios.
My grandfather came to live with us when I was four years old, and I can still see him in front of the television watching ever basketball game that was ever played. I did not know it then, but my grandfather had played basketball when he was in high school. Basketball and his coach had been the only reason that he had been able to stay in school and graduate. to work hard, and all the hard work would eventually pay off. He always drove me to watch the older kids play. He also encouraged to play with them so I could get tougher and better. I was very intimidated by the older kids, but he always encouraged me to keep on going and to never give up. The biggest lesson I learned from him was if I lost the game to keep my head held up high because I knew that I gave it everything I had and that next time I would be better.
When I got to middle school. My skills had improved dramatically. I began ti see a direct connection between hard work and success. That is when my grandfather said. There is no greater feeling then winning a district championship. I knew then that this was his way of setting his goal for me. I never really thought much about it I just put in the back of my mind.
